Halle Lidner is the only female member of the SPK (Special Provision for Kira) and one of the four surving after Mello whiped out half the SPK using the Death Note. She joined the Kira case for many reasons, but mainly to avenge the death of an accquatince of hers killed by the Yotsuba Kira. She is a former CIA agent who worked in the Secret Service protecting the President of the United States of America; therefore, she is chosen by Near to be Kiyomi Takada's bodyguard, that and her being a female. [Her skills are seen when restraining MIsa Amane at NHN when she tried to kick Takada.]
When Takada and Misa eat dinner together, Lidner is asked to come, although the dinner was supposibly private; she later reports back to Near about the two's conversation quoting 'You wouldn't believe me, but they seemed to be fighting over Light Yagami on who loves him.' allowing Near to act a small bit humorous by saying 'That settles it then; Light Yagami... is a lady killer.'
She passes information gained from Near to Mello, hinting she neither is on Near's side or Mello's; as opposed to the rest of the SPK whom make no contact with Mello and are strictly on Near's side.
She was used by Mello in order to find Near when he cornered her while she took a shower [In the anime he waited for her outside her shower, in the manga he was in her bathroom with her] even flirting with him. She shows no sign of weakness knowing Mello wouldn't hurt her when he put the gun to her head, and that he himself knew that well. She does as told and leads Mello to Near, when he threatens to shoot Near, Lidner jumps in the way of his gun, telling him that shooting Near would not solve anything at all; Mello appears to listen to her, and lowers his gun. Near later thanks her [In the manga, in the anime he does not.]
When Mello kidnapped Takada, Lidner was the one to clue him in; by telling him of Near's plans, he was able to go after Takada. Of course, Lidner willingly let her on his motorbike; but after Mello takes off, she instructs other bodygaurds to go after Mello, and not only Matt-- telling them not to let her out their sight, which, of course, happens.
Arriving at the scene where Mello takes Takada, upoun seeing the flames, doesn't think about Takada's saftey but instead Mello's, by thinking to herself 'Oh No... Mello...' She later proves more of her sympothy by telling Near she was sorry about Mello. Near replies flatly with 'It's okay,' as he didn't really care about Mello's death, nor Takada's.
